THE NEED FOR TRAINING

TRAINING

Anyone that has owned a German Shepherd understands that with even limited training, your relationship with your dog and his ability to seamlessly blend into your family is enhanced exponentially. Training leads to a strong bond between you and your pet and provides the dog with a job, specifically learning.
A good training environment and a professional trainer who will guide you through these simple techniques is essential for success. Good training techniques will increase the speed your dog learns.
Over the years we have seen that Schutzhund training techniques are exemplary for German Shepherds. Although we are not proponents of bite work for family pets, the Schutzund BH or basic obedience is a recommended best practice for this breed.
Many of the dogs we rescue have limited or no training. Many need socialization with other dogs and people. We never place a dog without first evaluating him for all traits that would make him a family pet. We do not take in aggressive dogs and would not accept any aggressive dogs for re-homing. We will ask that you sign a document stipulating that any dog you get from us should be professionally trained.
We recommend that you seek out and use a local Schutzund club for training or affiliate with a private trainer such as Viet Bachmann, whose web address is: http://www.aasvtk.com/. These folks know the breed and can provide the best structured environment for them to learn. The two local Schutzund training clubs located in the Ft Myers area are also excellent places to take your dog locally. Their web addresses are: http://www.gsscswfl.com/ or http://www.gcscfortmyers.com/. Please feel free to contact them directly for information, prices and training dates. In the Punta Gorda area, the Peace River Dog fanciers club is also a good and inexpensive training club.

Lyn Morningstar at 239 489 3787 is also a good source for GSD training.
