GUS IS IN A NEW HOME AND SPECIAL FAMILY

UPDATE; GUS WENT TO A FAMILY THAT WAS NOT WILLING TO TAKE CLASSES WITH HIM AND NOW HAS DECIDED TO RETURN HIM. WE ARE DISAPPOINTED THAT HE IS BEING REHOMED BUT WE ARE CONFIDENT THAT HE WILL DO WELL ONCE TRAINED AND SOCIALIZED WITH OTHER DOGS. GUS IS GREAT WITH PEOPLE AND KIDS BUT REACTIVE WITH OTHER DOGS.

IN THEIR SECOND BREACH OF OUR CONTRACT THE FAMILY WHO DIDN'T TRAIN THE DOG HAS NOW INFORMED US HE WAS GIVEN TO A DESOTO SHERIFF. GUS come to us back on 10/2/15 from Collier County. He was a street stray and no one adopted him there at the shelter. Gus is a handsome neutered male sable GSD. He is approximately 3.5 but he could be slightly younger. He weighs about 75 pounds and carries it well. For the past 6 months he has lived with a loving family and is heart worm negative and in excellent health. He has a fabulous coat rich in color and soft as cotton. He is house trained great with people and kids and reactive with other dogs. IF YOU HAVE OTHER PETS GUS IS NOT RIGHT FOR YOU. HE NEEDS A NO OTHER PET HOME. UNTIL HE IS SOCIALIZED WHICH COULD TAKE A WHILE, HE NEEDS TO BE THE ONLY PET. I evaluated him back on 10-3-15 prior to accepting him in rescue and he proved to be a great boy. He was basically untrained but we were assured by the family that they would take classes with him but did not follow through. HE WAS AND REMAINS UNSOCIALIZED WITH OTHER DOGS. He learns fast and will do very well with training which is a requirement of our rescue. He wore a pinch for the first time and adapted to it immediately. He is OK with leash walking but on a 1 to 10 scale it was a 5 max then but a 10 now for leash walking and control. His issue seems to be dog to dog reactivity. He needs training in every area, mostly socialization. He appears to be fabulous with people, children and female dogs and not great with males. We have not tested him on his socialization lately, but at training back then he was agitated with all dogs male and female and he needs to calm down which can only happen with training and consistent exposure to a social setting at training.
The family who took him did know that but refused to follow through with our requirements hance his return to us now. He needs to go to an owner and be trained with a firm alpha so as to know right from wrong in doggy behavior. He is HW negative and physically very strong with what appears to be excellent hips and structure. He was neutered in Oct 2015 and available immediately to the right owner. He has been chipped and has all shots. This is a mans type dog, in that he has great lines, a masculine face and temperament and what appears to be a strong will when it comes to other male dogs. I did not see this behavior manifest itself when I evaluated him but we did not do a dog intro at that time. He was subsequently taken to training by John and showed some fear and was corrected numerous times for bad behavior. I strongly recommend he be in a 1 dog and no cat home until such time as he is socialized. He remains untested with cats and has a good drive but is by no means a 'nutsy-crazy' dog. He has a calm temperament with people in general, easy going, affectionate and composed as well as strong willed and alert.

His owner who loves him dearly wrote:
Gus is a energetic fun loving dog. He loves to go on walks and really enjoys the occasional run. Gus loves to chew on bones and is a great family dog. He is fully house trained and knows basic commands. Gus needs to be in a house where he is the only dog because he does not do well with other animals. He is wonderful with children. Gus has a huge heart and loves being around his owners. He would do better with a young person or family because he is strong willed and very strong.
He is on taste of the wild grain free high prairie canine dry food it does best with his sensitive stomach. He eats 3 1/2 to 4 1/4 cups a day
