CRUELTY-FREE LEE PET LAWS

ANTI-TETHERING/CHAINING REQUIREMENTS
Animals may not be fastened, chained, tethered, or otherwise tied.

Although the best solution to tethering is to bring your pet indoors, perimeter property fencing, kennel or run or
electronic containment system are acceptable methods for outdoor housing of pets. Dog houses are not
permissible.

Outdoor housing shall be a minimum of 32 square feet per animal which is the size of a 4x8 kennel. A 10x10
kennel is a better size providing pets with better room for exercise and movement. The price of the 4x8 and
10x10 kennel is identical at Home Depot or Lowes for $299.00. Outdoor housing of animals require a covered
area or solid top to protect an animal from direct rays of the sun, wind or rain and free from unsanitary
conditions. Tops to fit the 4x8 or 10x10 kennel are available at Home Depot or Lowes for $129.00.

Animals may only wear a specifically manufactured and properly fitted collar. Chains, leashes, choke or prong
collars are not permitted to be used as collars.

STERILIZATION REQUIREMENTS
Animals over the age of six (6) months shall be sterilized by a licensed practicing veterinarian. A certificate of sterilization shall be produced if requested by Animal Services. Exempted from this Section are:
*Animals Registered with a National Registry
*Hunting Dogs of Owners Possessing a Valid Hunting License
*Agricultural Working Dogs Owned by a Bonafide Agricultural Business
*Seasonal Pet Owners Not Possessing a Homestead, Driver’s License or Permanent Residence with a Lee
County Address
*Written Exemption by a Licensed Practicing Veterinary for Animals with a Temporary or Permanent Medical
Condition

BREEDING REQUIREMENTS
Domestic dogs and cats may only be bred if they are registered with an International or National Dog or Cat Registry. A registry for each animal shall be produced if requested by Animal Services.

MICROCHIP REQUIREMENTS
Animals shall be microchipped and the information registered with Animal Services within thirty (30) days.
Exempted from this Section are:
*Agricultural Working Dogs Owned by a Bonafide Agricultural Business
*Pets of Seasonal Visitors that Do Not Possess a permanent Florida address, Florida Homestead or Florida
Driver’s License
*Written Exemption by a Licensed Practicing Veterinary for Animals with a Temporary or Permanent Medical
Condition
PET DEALER, PET STORE OR FLEA MARKET REQUIREMENTS
Only dogs and cats registered with an International or National Dog or Cat Registry may be offered for sale. Failure to comply may result in impoundment of animals not possessing a registry.
